Defuse vs. Diffuse: Calm Down or Spread Out?

The Distinction

  • Defuse = to remove the fuse; to reduce tension or danger
  • Diffuse = to spread out widely; scattered or unfocused

Using Defuse

“Defuse” means to make a situation less dangerous or tense:

  • “The negotiator managed to defuse the crisis.” ✓
  • “Her humor helped defuse the tension.” ✓
  • “The bomb squad defused the device.” ✓
  • “Quick thinking defused the argument.” ✓

Think of literally removing the fuse from a bomb.

Using Diffuse

“Diffuse” means to spread or scatter:

As a verb:

  • “The fragrance diffused through the room.” ✓
  • “Social media helps diffuse information rapidly.” ✓
  • “The light diffused softly through the curtains.” ✓

As an adjective:

  • “The diffuse lighting created a soft ambiance.” ✓
  • “His argument was too diffuse to follow.” ✓ (spread thin, unfocused)

Memory Trick

  • Defuse = de-fuse, remove the fuse, make safe
  • Diffuse = spread in different directions (think “diff” = different places)

Common Error
