Lead vs. Led: Present or Past?

Published on January 15, 2024

The Confusion

“Lead” has two pronunciations and meanings, which creates confusion with “led.”

  • Lead (rhymes with “feed”) = present tense verb, to guide or direct
  • Lead (rhymes with “bed”) = a heavy metal
  • Led (rhymes with “bed”) = past tense of “lead” (the verb)

Lead as a Present Tense Verb

When pronounced “LEED”:

  • “I lead the team meetings every Monday.” ✓
  • “Good communication skills lead to success.” ✓
  • “She will lead the project.” ✓

Led as Past Tense

When talking about the past, use “led”:

  • “She led the team to victory last year.” ✓
  • “The path led through the forest.” ✓
  • “His curiosity led him to the discovery.” ✓

Lead as a Metal

When pronounced “LED” and referring to the element:

  • “The pipes were made of lead.” ✓
  • Lead paint is hazardous.” ✓
  • “The pencil core is actually graphite, not lead.” ✓

Common Error

People often write “lead” when they mean “led”:

  • “Yesterday, she lead the meeting.” ✗
  • “Yesterday, she led the meeting.” ✓

Memory Trick

Think of “read” and “read”—the past tense changes pronunciation but keeps the spelling. “Lead” works the same way, except the past tense changes both spelling AND keeps the “ed” sound: led.
